Can You Put Heavy Furniture on a Floating Floor?

The weight is rarely the problem. Whether the load pins the floor in place is.

A floating floor is fastened to nothing. The planks lock to each other and rest on the subfloor, which is the whole reason heavy furniture on a floating floor behaves differently than it would on nailed hardwood or glued-down tile. Ask online whether your fridge is a problem and you will get a 500-pound limit, a 600-pound limit, and a reassuring take that vinyl is tough enough not to worry about — all in the first handful of results. The numbers disagree because they are answering two different questions that happen to share a headline.

Short answer: Most household furniture and appliances are fine. Floor & Decor's guidance is that objects under 500 pounds suit a properly installed floating vinyl floor, and that legs or wheels should never sit directly on a click joint. The two real limits are separate problems: anything permanently fixed stops the floor moving — Mohawk requires kitchen cabinets to go in before the floor, never on top of it — and concentrated pressure leaves dents, with one Tarkett LVP specification listing a static load limit of 250 psi.

Two failure modes for heavy furniture on a floating floor

Start with the mechanism, because it decides which rule applies to your object.

A floating floor expands and contracts as a single sheet. That is why it is installed with a gap at every wall — COREtec's SPC guidelines call for 1/4 inch of perimeter space under 2,500 sq ft and 1/2 inch above it — and why the expansion gap is not optional. Pergo's laminate instructions put the principle in one line: floor movement must not be constrained by glue, nails, screws, hardware or other fixed obstructions.

A 700-pound safe standing across four planks is a fixed obstruction whether or not anyone screwed it down. Floor & Decor's help centre describes the outcome plainly: the concern with a heavy object on floating flooring is that it limits the floor's ability to expand or contract, and with direct pressure on the joints and planks, that can cause buckling if movement is blocked. The damage does not necessarily appear under the heavy object. The field has to release its movement somewhere, so the peak or the gap often turns up several feet away.

Indentation is unrelated. It is pressure — pounds divided by the contact area — pushing into the wear layer and core until the material stops recovering. A chair leg can beat a refrigerator at this, which is why a pound figure on its own tells you very little.

What the published weight limits actually say

Most flooring manufacturers publish no pound limit whatsoever. The 500-pound figure in circulation comes from retailer guidance — Floor & Decor states that most objects under 500 pounds are suitable over a properly installed floating vinyl floor — and it is a sensible rule of thumb rather than a specification pulled from a test report.

What manufacturers do publish is pressure. Tarkett's Create Clarity luxury vinyl plank lists a static load limit of 250 psi with residual indentation of 0.005 inch or less, tested to ASTM F970. That test loads the floor and then measures the depression still left 24 hours after the weight comes off, which is a better description of the failure you care about than any single weight. ANSI's listing for the 2022 edition of F970 notes that loads above 250 psi fall outside the scope of the method, so 250 psi is close to the top of the range these products are characterised in at all.

The practical consequence: convert your object into pressure before you worry about it.

The pressure table nobody prints on the box

Pressure is total weight divided by the number of contact points, divided again by the area of each point. The weights and contact areas below are illustrative assumptions rather than measurements of your furniture, but they show where the risk actually sits — 250 psi is the reference line.

The half-ton pool table is the gentlest thing on the list, at roughly 19 psi, because six wide feet spread the load. The 500-pound piano is the only entry over the line, and it gets there on three small casters. A dining chair with an adult in it lands at 160 psi bare and 80 psi on inch-wide protectors — the single cheapest intervention on this page.

Note what the pool table row does not tell you. Low pressure says it will not dent the planks; it says nothing about the thousand pounds sitting across several seams and stopping that section of floor from moving. That is the other failure mode, and it has a different answer.

Cabinets and islands: where manufacturers actually say no

This is the one case with hard instructions behind it, and the two big systems resolve it in opposite directions.

Both rules protect the same thing. Mohawk keeps the floating field clear of the cabinet run entirely; COREtec allows the cabinet run but converts that patch of floor into a glue-down installation, with a two-foot margin so the transition between glued and floating material is not directly under the load. Follow the document for the product you bought, and if you are still choosing, this is a genuine difference worth knowing before the kitchen gets ordered.

Mohawk's instructions are more permissive than the headline suggests, and the exceptions are useful. Vanities with legs can sit on the floor, since the floor continues underneath and the legs are point loads rather than a continuous fixed base. Toilets can be installed over the flooring too, with expansion space left around the flange and premium waterproof 100% silicone caulk to seal it — and one prohibition that matters: do not anchor the toilet through the material.

One planning consequence of installing cabinets first: the flooring stops at the cabinet run, so the cabinet footprint comes out of your order. That is the same subtraction covered in measuring a room for flooring, and on a kitchen it is easily a box of material.

Appliances: the fridge is fine, the details around it are not

A household refrigerator runs roughly 200 to 400 pounds, inside the under-500-pound guidance and, on broad feet, nowhere near 250 psi. Three details do the damage instead.

Feet on click joints. Floor & Decor's guidance is to avoid placing any legs or wheels of an object directly on a click joint, and to use furniture coasters to help disperse weight. A joint is the weakest line on the floor; a levelling foot parked on one concentrates load exactly there.

Water. Mohawk's instructions call for expansion spaces around potentially wet areas — refrigerators and tubs among them — to be filled with premium waterproof 100% silicone caulk. A rigid core is waterproof, but the perimeter gap behind an ice-maker line is a direct route to the subfloor.

Moving it. The instruction is unambiguous: never push, pull or drag furniture, appliances or other items across the floor, and always lift and carry them. Rolling a fridge out on its own wheels to change a filter is how a click joint gets separated.

Height is the other appliance question, and it is a different constraint again: adding a floor over an existing one can leave a dishwasher or a range no longer able to slide out. Vinyl plank over tile covers those clearances, including the standard dishwasher opening.

The protector spec: 1 inch, rubber, and no dragging

Mohawk's care and maintenance section is where the concrete numbers live, and they apply to every floating floor whether or not your product repeats them:

  • Floor protectors at least 1 inch in diameter under the legs of chairs, appliances and all heavy furniture, non-staining, and cleaned periodically so grit does not embed in them and start scratching.
  • Casters of rubber, not plastic or metal, with light rolling furniture on broad-surface casters a minimum of 1 inch wide and at least 2 inches in diameter.
  • A hard-surface, non-studded, non-rubber chair mat for office chairs on casters.

Pergo's laminate care guidance is the same instinct in fewer words: felt protectors under the legs of moveable furniture, rubber casters rather than plastic or metal. The pressure table above is the reason the inch matters — the same occupied dining chair drops from 160 psi to 80 psi on a 1-inch protector, without buying anything else.

Attached pad underfoot does not change this. A soft layer under the plank gives the surface somewhere to go, so if anything it makes narrow feet worse rather than better; what the attached pad is actually for covers what that layer does and does not do.

When to spread the load or glue it down

For the small number of objects that genuinely exceed both limits — a gun safe, a slate pool table, a large aquarium, an upright piano — you have three options, in increasing order of commitment.

Widen the contact area. Broad load-spreading pads, or a sheet of plywood under the footprint, divides the same weight across far more square inches. This solves indentation and helps with point pressure on joints. It does not release the floor to move.

Keep the object off the seams and away from the perimeter. If the load sits in the middle of a plank rather than bridging joints, and the perimeter gap is intact all round, the field still has room to work. This is a partial answer, and it is the one most homes rely on.

Adhere that area. This is the manufacturer-sanctioned solution, and COREtec's cabinet rule shows the pattern: fully bond the material under the load, extend the bonded zone about two feet past it, and the floating field beyond is unaffected. It is a decision to make before installation, not after.

If a floor has already buckled or peaked, adding protectors will not fix it. Something is constraining movement — a fixed object, a molding nailed through the field, a perimeter gap that was never left, or a transition strip pinning two sections together. Find the constraint first; the expansion gap requirements by manufacturer are the place to start, since most buckling traces back to that number.

Sort your object into one of two questions. Is it heavy and fixed, spanning seams and unable to be lifted? Then the issue is movement, and the answers are the manufacturer's: cabinets and islands go in before the floor, or that area gets fully adhered with a two-foot margin. Is it heavy and standing on small feet? Then the issue is pressure, and the answer is contact area — protectors at least an inch across, rubber casters no narrower than an inch, and load-spreading pads for the piano. Almost everything else in a house is under 500 pounds, well below 250 psi, and simply needs its feet kept off the click joints.
